Replica of Gyptis I made by Dimitris Maras
The legend of Gyptis and Protis is the founding myth that tells the legendary foundation of Marseille (Massalia) around 600 BC. by Greek settlers from the city of Phocaea in Ionia. The myth is at least at the v th century BC. J. – C. as Antiochos of Syracuse mentions it 1. But we now have only two main sources: the story described by Aristotle in "The Constitution of the Massaliotes", the oldest, and that of Trogue Pompey in his Philippine Stories, today lost but summarized by the Roman Justin. If both versions present some differences, they both tell the story of the marriage of Gyptis (or Petta), daughter of the chief of the indigenous Ségobriges, with Protis (or Euxène), a sailor from Phocée. During her wedding, the princess then chooses to marry the foreigner by presenting him a cup filled with water during a meal 2. Several hypotheses clash to explain the origin of the myth, which has elements similar to other legendary stories of antiquity . But history also supports a part of the legend since recent excavations show the presence of Greek colonies at the beginning of vi th century BC. J.C. around the district of the Basket.
