GOLETA or HEMIOLIA

Goleta was a nicely shaped ship with a usually round stern, beautiful rigging, fast and agile. They loved it and sang of it a lot. Greeks began to build small two-masted Goletes of 8-10 tons at the beginning of the 19th century. Then they raised them to become ships, large sailboats with a length of 30-35 barges in the hull. Armed with 6 12-litre cannons and one in the bow for the attack, they acted successfully in the struggle of 1821. Goleta "TERPSICHORI" belonging to the brothers Manolis and Giakoumaki Tombazi was built in 1818. It acted heroically in the war of Independence 1821, so much so that it is characterized by the Turks as "devil's ship" (seitan-gemisi).
